Birdseye Maple Burl and Epoxy River Table
This stunning table began its journey four years ago on the Oregon coast as a massive burl that filled the back of our Subaru. After negotiating a deal—exchanging a case of beer and a handful of hundred-dollar bills—we brought it home to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
The next challenge was finding a mill large enough to slab the burl. That search led me to a logger in Silver Valley, who used a custom-built mill crafted from spare parts. Once the slabs were cut, I stored them in my garage for a year, allowing them to dry to the ideal moisture content for epoxy work.
When the time was right, I carefully poured nine gallons of epoxy into the forms, waiting anxiously for it to cure. Next came the challenge of flattening the slabs. Without access to a planer large enough for the job, I built a custom router sled. After that, countless hours of sanding and polishing transformed the wood into a smooth, breathtaking surface.
To complete the piece, I collaborated with my climbing partner’s father, who crafted custom steel legs to complement the table’s unique character. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that tells a story of craftsmanship, patience, and passion.
